Hello there Bloggers!! It's not only February but we are 8 days into it. Since it is a short month, I expect it will go way too fast. Today was the Share The Love Event at Mimi's Crop Circle in Burien. I was one of the 6 individuals all managing make-n-takes for a good three hours and I have to tell you that I had an absolute blast. It was exactly the creative endeavor that I needed to give me a jump start for, believe it or not, 2014. I've been dragging my heels for whatever reason and always too busy to really ever get started. Well, that is about to change. Today was total fun, very envigorating, and what I really want to do. So with that said, I am planning for more classes, more playtime for creating art with family and friends, and more of what just simply feels good. I suspect that many of you can and will relate to what I am saying and hope that you are able to capture your creative spirit in whatever form it comes to you.
As I mentioned above, today was spent in the company of many individuals who stopped by Mimi's to participate in the make-n-takes and likely added to their "stash" of goods with some of the products that were being used in the make-n-takes. It is so fun to be introduced to new folks coming on board and especially fun to see some of the regulars to catch up of whatever might be happening. It is definitely an excellent opportunity to support a small business, like Mimi's, who is more than willing to give back to its loyal friends and customers in ways that go beyond what may not be totally visible on the surface. One example is that parking is FREE to customers coming into Mimis. How often does that happen? Another is that work space is available much of the time to spread out and work on projects. Again, how often does that happen? Let's not forget that it is a great meeting place, or, as I prefer to call it, a "playpen" for exploring and pursuing our creative journeys. Where else can you gather with your friends for a 14-hour marathon of fun? I guess I am drifting off into a tangent here but I have been thinking a great deal about some of these things so I guess there is no better place than a blog to spill one's guts so to speak. A really good example of how Mimi's gives back was demonstrated just today. Not only were there six FREE make-n-takes for individuals to sit and create and free prize drawings, but refreshments were also available including coffee. One more time..... how often does that happen?
Where am I going with all of this?? Well, I really don't know but. having been a former retail store owner, I understand some of the obstacles, successes, and what might go on behind the scenes. I don't know everything of course but I do know that when you or I, as consumers, support small business we do much more than what one might think. Do you realize that a mailing list of say 500 individuals who each spent $20.00 in the same small business would gross that small business $10,000 over a month's time. I guess I am feeling a little melancholy because I was not able to reach out far enough to acquire some of the financials required to retain a small business. I still mourn its loss (as do many others) so please keep that in mind when shopping at some of the bigger chains. Yes, they have great deals with coupons, etc., but make the commitment that if you spend $20.00 at one of the big chains that you will spend an equal amount at Mimi's. Our shopping dollars make a HUGE difference to a small business like Mimis and we want our community store to be strong and continue to offer its fabulous products and services for years to come. Only we can make that happen.
Well, I certainly did get off on a tangent but I think that many of you already get it and have been on board for a long time. So now let's make your support contagious. Please help spread the word to friends, family, and coworkers about the fabulous resources that Mimis has to offer and encourage them to spend time there with you and others in a welcoming and creative environment. We can all make a difference and, collectively, it will really pay off. The folks at Mimi's have no idea that I am writing this blog (a surprise to me as well) but I do know some of the hardships that come with owning a small business like Mimis and so I am just wanting to encourage individuals to consider where they might put some of their spending dollars. Just reading this blog means a lot to me, so, if you are at this point, just know that "you rock".
Thank you for reading my manuscript and, until the next time, I leave you all with a photo below of the make-n-take that I worked at today using beeswax and napkins. It was a total blast and I wish that everyone I know could have been there, but not to worry, there will be more. Hugs to All - Doris
Doesn't this card just say it all? I should have counted how many folks came through to make this card but did not. There were many and I can truely tell you that all of them were beautiful. What a great celebration for sharing the love!! Again, until the next time.......
